A first-timer's point of view

I have been filing my taxes for 10 or 11 years now. This year was the first year I prepared and filed them online. It was a step-by-step process that was fairly easy and not too time-consuming.

Unless you hate to type, online tax preparation and filing is the way to go! There is no need for an Online Tax Preparation for Dummies manual as this is simple to do and there are help links on every page.

If you fall within a certain income range, some websites that offer online tax filing will charge you ZERO for the filing of your taxes. Yep, that is right--zip, zero, nada! So why not choose this route when it is tax time?!?!

When you get the desired website, you enter your personal information (such as name, address, social security number, etc) just like you would if you were filing a paper tax return. The site will lead you through everything from possible deductions to filing status, dependents to exemptions, earned income credit to donations you may want to make. It is set up just like the forms you would pick up at your post office or library. You just have to type the information instead of write it. The site will also go through error checks after every stage you complete. You have the ability to review your entries before filing them electronically. You also have the ability, in some states, to file your state tax return via the good old World Wide Web.

As a matter of fact, in filing our state tax return online this year pointed out a mistake in last year's paper return I filed with the state. So that is yet another advantage of online filing.

As for the disadvantages, I know of none. I will definitely continue filing and preparing our taxes online!
