If you have any type of swipe card, you need to read this.Jul 07 '00 Write an essay on this topic. The S.S. was at grocery store lately using the ol' debt card to pay for groceries but the card would not scan, but the cashier was able to get it to scan though. How? Read on. A lot of people out there think that they can cut credit card fraud if someone stole their cards by simply scratching off pieces of the swipe area on the back of the card. This way if the thief tried to charge, they stand a higher risk of getting caught. Does this make it impossible for card swipe machines to swipe the card? No. But I bet you thought that it did! The cashier took my card and said "No problem, there is a way." She took one of the plastic grocery bags and covered the swipe area and with no trouble at all the card swiped. "The plastic fills in the areas of the card so the scanner can read the card.", she said. What does this mean to you as the consumer? Some consumers out there purposely scratch their card so the person charging to the card must manually type in the card numbers or use the old manual charge machines you see in old movies. When they have to type it in they also are looking at the name and experation and normally they may match it up to a driver's license. I wonder if taping together a cut up card with a piece of plastic bag over the swipe area would still make the card work? |
