How Fair are ATM Surcharges

To pay or not to pay . . .

Jan 13 '00

The way I see it you have two choices, you can either pay the fees to use ATMs or you can avoid paying the fees. For myself I choose to avoid paying the fees because I can think of better uses for my money than paying $2 every time I want to withdraw $20 from the bank. Everyone has this choice so I really don’t see what all the complaining is about the high fees. I won’t argue with the fact that the fees the banks charge are high. What I take issue with is people whining about having to pay the fees. There are very easy ways to get around it. Although these have been well documented in other epinions I will briefly touch on some options to avoid paying ATM charges.

1) Use a bank with many ATM machines so you won’t have to use machines from other banks.

2) When you do use the ATM machine, take out additional money so you won’t have to visit the machine so frequently.

3) When you go to the grocery store, write your check for more than the amount of the groceries and get cash back. Most people go to the grocery store at least once per week so there is no need for an additional trip. If anything getting money at the grocery store instead of an ATM will not only save you money because you won’t have to pay an ATM fee, but it will also save you time because you won’t have to go to the bank as well.

These suggestions merely represent common sense. Should you choose not to use these ideas that is your choice, but please don’t complain about having to pay ATM fees. Also, you can use this same common sense mentality so save in other areas. For example, there are many banks that offer free checking if you keep a minimum balance in your account. You can also avoid the exorbitant interest rates credit card companies charge by paying off your balance each month.

Banks are in business to make money just like any other for profit organization. We can choose to pay the fees or we can choose not to pay them. To give an analogy, I personally find Nordstrom to be too expensive for my pocketbook. I love the store -- the clothes are high quality, the salespeople are helpful, etc. But the bottom line is it’s too expensive for me so I choose not to shop there. I don’t whine about the high prices. Instead I choose not to pay them. So please don’t complain about ATM charges -- just change your habits.
