Renting Has Its Advantages

Oct 20 '00

In most cases buying a house is the preferable way to go. Young couples and young singles are wise to invest in a house rather than have their rent go down the drain. I have owned a home most of my life, however, upon retiring I took a different look at home ownership. (NOTE: I use WebTV and cannot paragraph so I use dots. ..............................................................................................................................................About five years ago I started making plans to retire to Southwest Florida to be near three of my four children and my four grandchildren. While this was the main reason, I was also ready for a new adventure in life. Where better to start one than in a warm climate surrounded by my children? One of my daughters and her husband owned a two bedroom, two bath condo on the second floor of a small condo complex. It had a lovely screened in lanai and offered plenty of room for one person. After their first child arrived they were feeling a little crowded in the condo so they made plans to purchase a large home, one they could stay in til they reached retirement age. They did not want to sell their condo because it was a good investment for them, but they were looking for a fulltime renter. C'est Moi! ................................................................................................................................................During a visit about three and a half years ago I brought all the measurements of my belongings in Omaha, along with a tape measure. One day while they were at work I carefully measured the condo and decided what would fit where. It grieved me to learn that I would have to part with at least a third of my furniture, but it all went to help fill up my daughters new home and other pieces went to another daughter and a son. I have visitation rights. I must say that when I moved here two and a half years ago, it was a great help knowing where to place the larger pieces. I had drawn a blue print of sorts stating where each piece would fit, and they did. One of the movers tried to tell me that my armoire entertainment center would not fit in the small bedroom, which I have turned into my den. I told him it certainly would fit because I measured. It fit. ................................................................................................................................................Getting back to the purpose of this epinion. Retiring on a very fixed income, comprised of social security and a couple of small pensions, I did not want the responsibilities that go with owning a home. If the air conditioner went out or the hot water heater quit working or the roof needed fixing...I wanted someone else to worry about that. What a perfect blend. My daughter and son-in-law retain ownership of their investment and I have the ideal living quarters with a guarantee that my rent will never increase and I can stay here as long as I am able. Hopefully that will be for many years. I'm as snug as that proverbial bug in a rug. At my age I don't need to worry about building equity, I need to know what my expenses will be each month. This arrangement suits my needs perfectly.
