| dmcostello's Full Review: Motley Fool Message Boards |
I’ve been following the Motley Fool for several years now. I first came across them on AOL back in 1994; I wasn’t a financial genius by any stretch of the imagination. I was pretty ignorant actually. But there was an excitement about the Motley Fool on AOL, it had come from nowhere to be one of the most popular areas on all of AOL.
Over the next couple of years, I kept my eye on the Fool, but I cancelled my AOL account right before all the well publicized connection problems. I no longer had the Fool to check in on, or so I thought. Over the years, I started educating myself on person finance matters, becoming more financially literate. I started off with Mutual Funds, then moved to individual stocks. My financial house was getting into order.
Then one day I came across Fool.com. The Fool has created a web based version of the AOL areas that I had visited years before. I feel in love with this site. There was a tremendous amount of information presented in a less technical, more conversational manner. It worked for me. The more I explored the site, the more useful information I discovered. Then I discovered the message boards.
There are many financial message boards out there. Yahoo has them, Silicon Investor, and Raging Bull were the ones that I frequented. They all had their strengths and weaknesses. Yahoo had the most messages, but there was so much spam, so much useless information that I stopped reading them. Silicon Investor and Raging Bull were both good, I didn’t love the interface to access the messages, but the content was great. They are geared towards a little bit more advanced investor. A newbie could learn here, but some of the info may go over their heads. I still read those message boards, but they are less comfortable to me than the Fool’s boards.
Why do I like the Fool’s boards best? Well, for one, they are moderated. This cuts down on the junk that you have to wade through like on Yahoo. Spam is removed from the boards so you don’t have to waste time and bandwidth on them. So these boards are much cleaner and more useful than Yahoo’s. They also have a good number of posts, not as many as Yahoo, but it is a quality vs. quantity thing.
Also, the Fools boards are a pretty friendly place for beginners. You are less likely to get flamed for what some people would consider a dumb question. Every time there is a split, you inevitable get a question from someone asking when do they have to own the stock to get the split. Instead of getting yelled at, most likely they will be told the answer or pointed in the right direction.
You can open an account at the Fool and mark some boards as your favorites. The site will keep track of the messages you read and let you know when there are new ones for you to read.
The Fool’s boards are the first place I go when I am looking to research a new stock. I try to read as many messages about a company that I can. Both good and bad. The community at the Fool is a great place where information is pooled from many sources. You get information from many different sources, from all over the world really. I recommend the Fool’s boards as a place for beginners and seasoned veterans. Beginners will learn a ton and the veterans can teach, as well as learn something themselves.
