After having an account with Merrill Lynch for over a year, I was attracted to etrade by the offer for a computer from myfavoritecomputer.com. I have been very pleased with both etrade and the computer. The computer is very adequate for everyday needs and internet access. The rebate came in about 3 weeks and I have had no trouble with the quality of the system. The monitor is about $100 extra and details about the specifications of the computer can be found at myfavoritepc.com. The etrade account must be opened with $1000 and remain open for one year.
I have found the etrade site easy to access and simple to understand how to buy and sell. Purchases through etrade for mutual funds are costly in my opinion as you can buy directly from the fund company without paying a transaction fee, but if you are trying to time the market, etrade lets you get very recent price quotes and put in purchase price at which you will buy at. As mutual funds are long term investments, this may not be critical anyway. This, however, may be very beneficial for buy and selling stocks.
For the knowledgeable investor who needs little guidance, Etrade is a great option for investing. For the novice investor, a real live financial consultant who knows you, your needs, plans for the future is a much better idea, but hey, you get a free computer for opening an account!!! Who can beat that option. This may be a great way for young investors to get started and get a computer for college.
