What would I do without plastic money !!!Apr 21 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Ah !!! At long last I feel qualified to write on this topic. After hankering for a card for 3 years and having finally received 5, I have to step back and evaluate my current position. What do I see ? Have credit cards made my life easier ? Am I financially better off ? Am I happier now ? Well, from my perspective, the answer is yes to all of those questions. Credit cards have made a difference in my life and the way I handle my money. Whether it be the convenience of zooming through the gas station or the astonishment on my buddy's face - "Hey, how the hell did you get a Discover Card", life is definitely better now that I have credit cards. I don't have to wait 2 weeks for my paycheck before buying that pair of Alfanis that I have been wanting and needing so bad. I can hear some of you going "OK, we lost another one". But I know what I'm doing. It's been quite a rough road getting here and I'm not about to blow it all. It's real hard to appreciate what you have while you have it. Credit cards are one of the most useful inventions of our times for enjoying (spending) what we work hard to earn. I come from a country where credit and bank automation are unfamiliar terms. People still need to wait 30 minutes in line to draw cash from their accounts. And merchants have to look up credit card numbers in their rosters to find out if the cards are legit because electronic credit card readers have only recently entered the markets. I can recall at least a couple of times my dad had to bum a ride to work because he could not wait 30 minutes in line to get cash to fill up the car - he forgot to do it on the weekend (OK, I made this one up :-D) But think about it and you will realize you can't really do without plastic money. And with the recent boom of the web (www), think about all the transactions you can conduct safely on the web (When I say safely, I refer to the protection offered by those good banks that shield you against unauthorized charges on the net - this will soon become a norm). Of course, debit cards allow the same conveniences as credit cards, but with a debit card, I'd not be wearing those Alfanis now. I'd be waiting for my paycheck...To me, that's the single biggest drawback of debit cards. Credit cards offer a lot of other conveniences that we all know about. One of the most important features is Protection. I have peace of mind knowing that I can call and cancel my card immediately should my wallet be lost. Who are you going to call to cancel those $100 bills you were carrying in your wallet ? Yes, I can definitely say that credit cards are a good thing. Though, like most other things in life, credit can be a bad thing if abused, and can destroy your life. It's up to you, the consumer, to protect yourself and make sure not to get mired in a pool of debt (Now I'm getting all ready to write about just how much credit a person should have, but I'll leave it for after dinner...) Take a moment to reflect on the old times when cash was everything. We need to change with the times. Don't fear plastic like it were a beast waiting to gobble you up. Learn to tame it and make it work for you - to make your life better... |
