| LaughingTarget's Full Review: SmartMoney |
After reading my DLJDirect review, one wonders where they can make up for the faults that lie in its layout. Of course, using a free site cannot improve trade royalties nor CS with your brokerage, but it sure can make up for the lack of information and poor finance tracking.
Good: SmartMoney.com is housed on a very fast and reliable server. The only problem I have yet to have was when the real time quote system was down for approximately two hours a few weeks ago. Luckily it was only after the markets closed. You can go to SmartMoney.com and expect everything to work. It is also quite zippy. Being cursed back to a 56k modem on terrible phone lines, I find it difficult to go much anywhere on the web without a huge wait. I like how SmartMoney.com does not lag at the beginning of its connection, like many sites do. Even though it is graphically intensive, I still load up the page in a reasonable amount of time. When I do happen to have a faster connection, the site comes up almost instantaneously.
SmartMoney always offers the most pertinent investor news. They have the day's ins and outs on every company. SmartMoney.com also has a nice section that informs us of future stock splits. They even have in-house investing professionals that can easily help the small time investor make good choices. Now if they would just add a real time chat function daily to talk to those investors and ask questions, SmartMoney.com would be the financial grail.
When checking individual quotes, I like how they have a function where you can type in both the stock symbol and the company name. It sometimes becomes difficult to remember the symbol for a company you are trying to look up, and this function helps out a good deal.
The individual stock profiles also have a very broad range of services. They are a quick link to the company's news. They have a profile of the company. You can also track the company's performance for the past few years, many cases back to IPO, to help make a decision for either short or long term investing.
My favorite part of SmartMoney.com is the personal portfolio. The portfolio is a snap to set up. I think it has up to 24 separate tabs with 50 stocks each. The portfolio will tell you how much you bought the stock for, how much cash you have on hand, the current stock value, share number, and even the percentage of your total investment portfolio is tied up in a particular stock. The portfolio also gives us information on how much we gained or lost since the portfolio was created. That is quite helpful in evaluating your performance.
Bad: The portfolio is actually a little slow to load. A Java applet was probably not the best choice for efficiency.
Bottom line: SmartMoney.com is a vast wealth of investment information. Be you a beginner or seasoned pro, SmartMoney.com has services that we can all benefit from to assist us in making our investment choices easier.
