Please Learn From My Mistake!!

How appropriate for me that this new category should surface here at Epinions. I have spent an entire weekend stressing over the cost of a college education for my oldest son who will be graduating from High School in just two short months.
Three days ago we visited the third college that my son was interested in. He decided he loves it. As we drove away, he made the announcement that this school was where he would be taking his classes in September! That is when the nausea set in. Our son has already been accepted to the school, so during our visit we popped in on the Financial Aid Office.......Even with the maximum student loan taken, the small scholarship that he was awarded and the financial aid, my husband and I will have to fund $8,000 per year for tuition alone. We do not have this kind of money!!!
We are a one income family with four children ranging in age from 3 to 17. The one income we do have, is not that large. We have always been told my others, not to worry that our son would qualify for all kinds of financial aid!!! We believed that. We lived in denial. We figured we would deal with it when the time came. There were always more pressing matters to deal with.
I did not save for my children's education.....there was always so many other ways the money had to be stretched. The costs of a college education were so large that I felt, there was no way I could ever save money like that. So, I saved nothing. Boy, do I regret it now. If you have children, do yourself a favor and put aside money. Take advantage of all the new savings plans. Read what the others here at Epinions are doing to save. Learn from others. It is important. No matter how little you are able to save, it will make a difference! Even having just a few thousand dollars could make a whole world of difference in how you will manage the costs.
Please, learn from my mistake! I would not wish the kind of stress I am wrestling with right now on my worst enemy.............save, save, save.....every penny counts!!!
