ATM and You
Jan 07 '00
Okay, ATM's and surcharges. What do you want to know? First and foremost, I know this because I used to work at a bank. The thing with ATM's verses going inside to a teller, is this...going into a teller, you "cost" the bank approximately $45.00 per transaction. Using the ATM, you "make" the bank approximately $11.00. That's their figures, not mine. Of course they don't want to tell you that...why should they bother you with dreary little details that would make you question the fees and surcharges? Which are growing by leaps and bounds daily.
The ATM that I use, has just started asking me if I would like a receipt for my transaction...meaning they're going to start charging for that in the near future also. As it is, most people do not have total access to their account through an ATM.
Say you have $15.00 in the bank and you need to pull out $5.00 to get you to payday...or because your car just ran out of gas. Most machines only dispense $20.00 increments...leaving you high and dry and sometimes walking home. Why do they do this you ask? Well, the more of your money that's sitting in the bank...the more interest they can acquire on it.
Yes, the banks make money off your money, also. The savings that they make off of a person using the ATM, should be passed on to the customer, but it isn't. The government should not only be looking at Bill Gates as a monopoly...he's a small fish next to the banking industry. If you haven't noticed, more and more banks are closing their "big" doors and opting for small floor space in grocery stores. The end of tellers as you know it.
They are gearing for the technological era...and really don't care too much about those who came from the old school...you know those who remember what "customer service" really was? Unfortunately, I've seen that their technology can gobble up customers money and make it vanish into thin air. It's a "very" stressful job.
For the upside of ATM's though, I can say...I do like them (when they work) and prefer them to standing in an angry line, because they only have two people behind the counter. I just make sure I know what I'm charged fees for and what I'm not...and only use the ones I'm not charged for. Times they are a changing and there's not too much we can do about it...or can we? The customer now needs to step out of their secure little cocoon and pay attention to what's going on with your money and speak your piece of mind when you need too. It is your money and "you" are the customer, without you, "they" wouldn't exist.
