ATM fees equal big profits...
Jun 02 '00
I believe that ATM fees are just plain part of doing business, but banks should be honest and admit that ATM fees are big profit margins for them. I get annoyed when I read their argument that ATM machines are expensive to install and maintain. On the contrary, it was their argument
in the beginning that ATM's were cheaper and cost effective, when they tried to eliminate human bank tellers. I think the public has a right to question and complain about the high fees. Even though I keep hearing the argument about this is capitalism, etc.. When banks are in trouble, they'll turn to the government to help bail them out(with our tax dollars)...Also, when large mergers are taking place, and the banks want government approval regarding matters of anti-trust and monopoly, the public interest is not served if all of a sudden there are no other banks around to compete with them.
