Beating the System

Banks are starting to charge non-customers for ATM use, but there are many things that non-customers can do to avoid those extra charges.
They can get extra money for no charge when shopping at supermarkets, getting gas at Mobil or Racetrac...

Re: Why do WE have to outsmart the banks? (Reply to this comment)

What a thoughtful, articulate comment.

Unfortunately, when banks close branches and ATM's, they are almost always in lower income areas where people need easy access to services.

I live in a somewhat affluent suburb...every day I get samples and coupons in the mail....cereals, shampoo, crackers, rice cakes. You name it!

"Why aren't they sending these samples to the people who really need them?" I think. And the answer is simple. Companies are looking for consumers who have the economic means for conspicuous consumption.

Why do WE have to outsmart the banks? (Reply to this comment)

This is an informative review. But let's think about this for a moment...why do we have to outsmart the banks to get OUR money back for free?

Face it, the banks should be paying US for the privilege of using our funds. Isn't it interesting that every time we come up with a way to get out money faster, banks come up with a way to "tax" it?

Debit cards -- costs us .50 cents to use.
Tellers -- cost up to 5 dollars to use.
ATMs -- don't even go there.
Checks. Ooooh, I get up to five whole checks for FREE!!!!

I think enough is enough. Banks exist because we let them, through our patronage and through legislation passed by our elected representatives.

Yes, they are businesses. Can we regulate them? Absolutely. (There are still usury laws, you know). The problem is in local action...SF and Santa Monica can suffer because the banks can retaliate. What we need to do is call, write, email Congress to take these junk fees off the books.

And if we lose a few ATMs in the process?
With the savings we make, we can put some of out own up!

That review was very helpful. I will spread the word. There are things we can do to not be charged and charged again for. Like getting OUR money from the bank.... :)

THANK YOU!

See folks, the banks CAN charge, but you don't have to pay those fees. Be smart, not lazy. Don't try to regulate someone for trying to make a buck off a luxury service they provide you.
