Let's Think About It, And Get Some Alternatives
Aug 25 '00
I've never been one to play video games, I never got into the swing of destroying things. But, I have always been interested in why my friends can spend uninterrupted hours playing games that don't seem to change after each run. I have tried to break into the magic. I've played Mario Brothers (It frustrated me). I've had boyfriends who's interested in "Diablo" and "Death-Something-Or-Other" was never explained to me.
People have explained their interest in video games as a way to get out their anger. I admit that I can understand why they think that it's better for them to get out their anger via television screen and hand controls. However, I don't know if I believe that this is really releasing the anger. Is it really a release when you are killing other persons, or focusing on some other type of destruction with flame throwers and bombs.
Studies aside I think that it must be detrimental to teach our future generations to destroy. Perhaps your children enjoy video games, and I understand that you too might have an addiction to the game. However, my dream is that these violent video-games are never there for the addicting period.
My dorm neighbors used to stay up until 3 in the morning "building civilizations and destroying them"...needless to say these are very disturbed people who I have never seen smile. But, why did these boys stay in their room all of the time with the sound of rapid fire and explosion when the sun is shining outside? Perhaps they don't like the sun, it was Northern California, we had months of rain...and they stayed locked in their room for that too.
Are all video game players the same? Of course not. I know very loving people who like to play video games (my little brother being one of them) Will all children who fake-kill grow up and kill? Certainly not all of the time. I'm not here to blame the school shootings on video games. But, why must this be used as an entertainment device? Can't society encourage some sort of positive activity?
Did the creators of these devices really think that children and adults would spend their time creating and destroying worlds because they were happy with their lives and society? I believe that violent (not all) video games were designed to feed into the underlying anger in some people. Why feed that? Why not replace it with a positive experiance?
I'm not referring to censorship, and certainly not government intervention. I'm talking about turning off the television/video games/computer, whatever it might be, and instead interacting with living breathing people. I too have tried to escape my reality by plugging into the Internet, coming up with all sorts of excuses about the normalcy of my action.
I'm sure that people have fun playing video games, there are a few computer games that I like. However, the amount of senseless violence and killing, unexplained sex and vulgar language is too much for me to condone this form of entertainment our society.
