Parents Responsibility for kids gaming habits

Jan 30 '00

Does it really matter about the violent content of some video games, or other media for that matter. Every time an American youth goes crazy and shoots up a school the first thing every one does is examine the ways that kid entertains themselves and realize that kid plays Doom or Quake or some other violent video game or listens to music like Marilyn Manson and just figures they are what drove the kid to open fire.
First of all that theory is ridiculous because for every one kid that does something bad because something they saw on tv or mainstream media there are ten or more that aren't affected. I know this because me and my friends fall in that category. I am an avid wrestling fan, I love violent games and movies and books, and I listen to heavy metal music including Marilyn Manson. So by that description most people are already formulating my personality; I'm aggressive, rude, stupid, I do drugs, I drink, I sleep around, ect. Well I'm none of those.
I'm 19 and have never been in a fight, I'm polite, Very intelligent(and I have the awards to prove it), and I quit doing drugs.
Nobody can truly blame the media because the media is simply a mirror of society, and as a society we like to watch violent and racy movies. Ultimately the responsibility falls on the parents to monitor what their child plays, reads, and watches. Blaming the media is just shifting the blame from your self because you didn't monitor your child close enough and you need some one to blame.
I'm not saying the media isn't with out fault either, I'm just saying countries like Japan show things on tv that we don't show in the movies and you don't hear about kids going psycho at school.
As parents you need to try and spend more time with your children, play the video game before they do, read magazine reviews, watch for the rating on the game packaging to see if it is acceptable for your child. Same for their music and favorite television programs. The store cashiers should also be more able to keep young children from buying movies, cds, or games with ratings that say that that product is for people of a certain age or older. Treat those ratings just like they were alcohol, cigarettes, or lottery tickets and card them.
Also I have to say that parents that let their children watch inappropriate tv and movies and play inappropriate video games and let them listen to cds with parental warning labels and strong lyrics shouldn't have the right to complain when that child is inspired by them. Also kids should be made to understand that what they see on tv, movies, and video games is only acting and that person isn't really hurt or dead.
