Violent video games probably do no harm
Feb 23 '00
I am neither for nor against violent video games and I don't really see the point in discussing the issue that much.
I was planning on doing a research project this semester, trying to find out if violent video games have any effect on a persons behavior.
So I looked at an abundance of previous research. The results were totally mixed and the only thing that a few studies found was that there might be a slight increase in aggression right after a person would play a violent video game.
These kinds of findings were rare and usually had a rather low significance.
I did not find one study that found an indication on long-term behavioral changes or changes in aggression or anything else.
It could be that aggression is increased during playing a game, it could be that aggression is decreased after having played a game (when the game serves as an outlet for aggression).
I decided not to do this study and after having reviewed all these articles, I conclude that there seems to be no significant indication that video games have a lasting effect on behavior, neither in adults nor in children.
I would let me child play whatever it wants to play.
