| tommy_lop's Full Review: Pilotwings for Nintendo 64 |
Pilotwings was a game released for the super nes to show the power of the system to 1st generation games and attract people to buy the game. Pilotwings 64 had the same idea when it was released clear back in 1996 when the N64 was released. I rented shortly after getting the N64 but thought the 40-dollar price tag was to high, last year I saw it on sale for 10 dollars and decided to pick it up.
The graphics:
The graphics for this game are no where near majoras mask but this is OK seeing how it is almost 4 1/2 years old. For a first generation game the graphics are probably the best you can find. There are mountains, houses, landmarks and other things for scenery. They also have other flyers, hangliders and people flying rocket belts around the course something the original Pilotwings didn’t have. To make the graphics even better there is little to no graphics fog in the game.
The only bad part is your playable characters are incredibly sharped edge. So much is looks like you could get a paper cut if you touch one of them.
Sound.
If you like elevator music then you must run out to the store and find a soundtrack of the game the rest of us normal people will just have to hit the mute button. All right so the music isn’t that bad and it does give you the feeling of flying but you still won't want to listen to it while your not playing.
Gameplay.
People who are looking for a airplane shooter game and people who are looking for a real flight simulation game will be disappointed. The game is neither realistic or action packed. What the game is basically piloting one of 3 vehicles (Gyrocopter, Rocketbelt, Hangglider) around a course with a mission objective.
The objectives of the game usually go around flying thorough rings, shooting targets, or taking pictures of something.
To make the game more interesting they have 6 characters to choose from and 3 character weight groups. The lighter characters will use less fuel and will go faster but will be blown around more by the wind, the heavy characters go slower use more fuel but won't be effected by the wind.
To make the replay value higher Nintendo has done the usual high plenty of secrets and un-lockable stuff. In each area there is a star which will unlock the birdman mini game. You can also unlock games like skies diving considering what your scores are on the regular courses are.
While this isen't going to get your blood pumping like goldeneye did it is a type of game that you can sit down and relax while playing.
