| Joe14's Full Review: Nightmare Creatures for PlayStation 1 |
Nightmare Creatures 2 is a new game ready to be released later this week (June 8, 2000). It has video game critics raving like they did before the first was released, but will it suffer the same fate? To get some good in-site you better read up on the original Nightmare Creatures game in which I have taken the liberty of reviewing for you.
For the two of you who are wondering, Nightmare Creatures was originally made for Playstation only, but has progressed on to such formats as the Nintendo 64. The main point of this game is to kill, kill, and kill some more. That was a little harsh on the wording by me, sorry. Here's what I should have said: kill, kill, killing getting old, game draining my energy, must shelf, never play again. There that's a little better.
Alrighty, now that you know there is going to be some killing I can let you in on the rest of the game stuff nobody cares about. Your goal is to basically reach the end of the level. Each level consist of intricate jumps, old time London locales, and tons of mutant type monsters. There's also a life meter that you have to fill in order to survive. To fill it you must kill zombies, vampires, and the like. You can choose to play as one of two characters, male or female. Both have special moves, weapons, items, etc. Nightmare Creatures may sound like a pretty good game as of what I told you up till now, but you can't judge a game by it's package, or if you like- cover. You know the saying right?
GRAPHICS
I like to think of the graphics as being like N'SYNC. So I wrote you a little acrostic poem to describe them.
Not that great of a show,
Same old same old,
You basically already know,
Not all items were sold,
Cause they tend to make your eyes scold.
Okay...that was a little uncommon huh, yeah I'd have to say so.
Hey, they were also different in a way. They lacked a girly side because they mostly consisted of blood and gore. I really hope no N'SYNC fans are reading this, If so, sorry about the butchering.
Now, time to get serious. The in game levels are mapped about London locales during the 16th century (like they know what it looked like). You play in places such as sewers, fortresses, and so on. The levels are pretty large, but that is no excuse. They are full of clipping, break-up, and a complete lack of detail. Enemies lack detail also, along with your player model. You will often find enemies walking through walls, your character getting trapped in walls, and things appearing from nowhere. What this all equates to? I guess you could say that the game is graphically challenged if you wanted.
SOUND
This would have to be the only highlight of the game that I found. It sounds way better than N'SYNC, and presents itself better. As you walk down alleys in the game eerie music keys in just before a surprise attack, while walking in the city you hear screams of pain and fright. This sets the stage for your fright fest, and is very cool. The overall soundtrack basically includes classical music with an added heavy bass line. The SFX includes things such as creatures footsteps, water gushing down the sewer pipes, and crows in graveyards. Also the wind sounds help create the environment of a nightmare from h*ll.
I would have to commend the masterminds behind these sounds, they are spectacular. Trust me, they are very enjoyable to play with.
CONTROL
This games controlling flat out turns you around and kicks you in the ass-phault. The highly delicate controls will often push you into unwanted territory. Translation- the controls respond to easily and always push you into falling off a cliff or some trash like that. Also the frame rate and camera angle refuse to parallel the controls. You always end up not being able to see what your fighting or were you may be heading (usually a headache is where your heading while playing this game). I would have to tell you that these controls rank with Jump Man for Commedor 64 (a very old computer which takes two minutes to load this Jumpman game which you run around and die every two seconds from lack of control).
REPLAY
"Argghh, I spit at de who playst dis twis", Captin Hook. Not really, but that's what he would say if him and Peter tried to play Nightmare Creatures. That's how bad it is, and you can take Captin Hook and joe14's word for it. All levels, monsters, weapons, backgrounds, etc. are the same. You will often find yourself bored out of your mind when playing this and resort to seeing how long you can go without looking at the screen. Or, just straight up shelving this bad boy.
Ratings on a scale to five
Graphics- 2
Sound- 5
Controls- 1
Replay- 1
This is probably one of the lowest ratings that I have given any game I have rated. I think that if Nightmare Creatures 2 follows the legacy, any potential buyer is in for a bad surprise. I recommend that you stay as far away from Nightmare Creatures as possible. Now for NC 2, we'll just have to wait and see. Oh yeah, the blood is plenty and voilence/ mature content too. If you defy my rating and get NC, make sure the one who is playing it can handle it.
