| GregRadiohead's Full Review: Mad Catz S-AV Cable DC |
If you're like me and want the best picture possible, without having to buy a VGA Box and screw around trying to hook it up to the computer, then the Mad Catz S-video cable is the way to go.
First of all, at the low price of $9.99, you can't go wrong. Secondly, this particular has the added advantage in that is has both A/V and S-video capabilities in one unit. Never again will you need to unplug that S-video cable and leave it by the TV when you want to go to your friend's house who only has A/V. The Mad Catz S-AV has both an S-video and A/V visual input on it. See the above picture to make sense of this. Notice it has the standard red and white audio plug ins which you would find on a S-video or A/V adapter. However, notice it has 2 yellow visual inputs. The box is inaccurate however; the S-video cable is really black and the regular A/V visual input is yellow. This was just common sense so idiots won't mix them up.
As far as improving picture quality, it will be significantly better picture then you would get on a RFU adapater. In addition, the step from A/V to S-video adds much needed crisp-ness and more 'brightness' to the image. The effects vary by game, but above all the colors will look better and text will lok crisper then before. The only thing I've notice so far, is that on a game like Shenmue that has lots of polygons on screen at once or lots of close ups of polygons, images will look more jagged. This does not mean all images will look like they have 'jaggies', a common complaint some people level at the PS2's first generation games. Whereas that problem was due to little effort in anti-aliasing, the problem that S-video causes is due to the crisper image, so everything is easier to see.
In the end, S-video's bad sides is outweighed by the good. If you've got 10 bucks lying around and what to see what the big deal is about S-video, then go out and buy one of these. Plus, if you mess up and really didn't have S-video on your TV, then at the very least you have a set of spare A/V cables.
