First off, "sim" type games are my favourite. I bought this game because I had the old one and liked it. I was not disappointed. I'm sorry, but I don't remember what I paid for this game.
There are some differences in the new RRT games (both 1 & second century) which are different than the old one. Most noticeably the switching control functions which were present on the old version are no longer available. But the many enhancements more than make up for that. The new versions are oriented to the "tycoon" rather than the engineer.
I liked the variety of goals presented in the different scenarios: Some had track goals like the toxic waste scenario. Some had money goals; Cargo goals, etc. This variety is what makes the game playable time after time. A nice touch is you don't have to follow the scenarios in direct order; You can choose whatever interests you at the time. And the challenges, although tougher as you progress, don't discourage the average to moderate player.
And, of course, you can create your own scenario. I really like the editor where I can create my own game parameters, land masses, etc.
Another feature I like with RRT that some other games lack is the absence of a play limit; If you like a particular scenario, you can continue to play it even after you have met the goal (or even if you didn't meet the goal).
This is a game for the "thinker" type player and might not appeal to the "action" type player. You must plan ahead extensively in this game.
My major criticism with this game is the aesthetics: It would be nice to have tunnels; and be able to have a railroad cross another via a bridge, etc. And the graphics are a little behind the times compared to other games in my opinion. Another helpful item would be an advanced gamer's manual which describes the codes used for events so you wouldn't have to do so much experimentation. This is probably available somewhere on the net. I haven't looked very hard.
All in all, this is my second favourite game. I recommend it to all "sim" type gamers. I think this game would appeal most to people who like business strategy games, railroads, and historical games.
