Let me just start this opinion by saying that this is a joint review comparing the good and bad of the Gran Turismo games. If it does what I want, then this opinion should help you decide what game to purchase if either of the two. My basic breakdown falls into five categories: Graphics, Sound, Controls, Replay, and Others. Enjoy!
ABOUT GRAN TURISMO: This is a mostly a simulation racing game, though their is a two player split screen battle and arcade racing mode. Your main goal is to race, collect prize money, buy and fix up cars, and win advanced racing events.
GRAPHICS:
Gran Turismo- This game was a revolution for the 1998 period graphically, showing some of the best detail and environments of any racing game. The 156 car models look awesome, and go into great into detail showing sponsers etc. on the side of your car. The courses are laid out excellently, and are beautiful to drive through. The only problem with the courses is the break-up you can see ahead of you. This is minimal, but a costly error.
Gran Turismo 2- Though the graphics aren't way above it's time like the first, the car models are. Over 500 to select, all in beauty and glory. The courses are still rough, but their are a good bit more than the first game. Along with the courses roughness comes the clip-art. At least that's what I like to call it. Here's an example of clip-art for you: You see a group of people in the stands, wait, they've become invisible, no, their they are in the sky. Stuff like that holds the graphics down big time.
SOUND:
Gran Turismo- Once again this game shines above all racing games of it's time with the sound. The tracks are awesome, as they play a variety of real songs in the background. By real songs I mean stuff you would here on the radio, not that elevator music and jingle junk. The car engines are the exact equivalent of the real thing, making you feel like the cars are, of course, the real thing. Add this, with some brake skidding and crashing, and you got the full package.
Gran Turismo 2- Not only do you get the full package with Gran Turismo 2, but you also get the bonus gift. Now, this is the continuing of the GT legacy unlike the graphics. You also get some real music, lots of it. The soundtrack includes Korn, Rob Zombie, Chemical Brothers, and more. Now you also get the sound of 500 realistic engine roars, and they change this time when you get more horse power on the same car. The sound on this game simply cannot be beat by any other racing game on the market today!
CONTROLS:
Gran Turismo- Controlling on Gran Turismo is rough, I won't lie. It is a complete simualation, so you can't go drive like a maniac like any other game. You must learn the art of cornering, accelerating, and holding to the road. Luckily there is a License mode, which you must have completed to race, in which will train you to drive better. I won't even go into complaining about that yet. Overall the controls are great, considering you have had a week of practice.
Gran Turismo 2- The exact same control scheme is present here. Everything is the same besides the slightly tighter steering. Also the menu's are a little tougher than normal, especially if you have been getting used to Gran Turismo's.
REPLAY:
Gran Turismo- This is one of the top games out there in replay value. You will be captivated for months, and I mean it. It is great for playing with friends, or by yourself. The deep simulation will keep you hearing engines in your sleep, and dreaming Gran Turismo's sweet dream.
Gran Turismo 2- Take what I just said about Gran Turismo, and double it. I mean it, this game is that fun. With over 500 cars to win, and over 100 competitions, you will never go to sleep. This game will take the best gamer or most devoted forever to beat. It doesn't get old either, it keeps as fun as ever till the end. Then you can play some 2 player battle with your friend, see what I mean.
OTHERS:
Gran Turismo- This game features a bunch of cars you can unlock through winning tournaments and money. Also, if you are good, you can find a HI-RES graphics mode by winning the main event.
Gran Turismo 2: Not only does this game have more cars and tracks to unlock, it also has better modes. There is rally racing, regular racing, time trails, and others at which to compete. It is great, and will keep you playing forever.
OVERALL SCORES ON A SCALE TO FIVE:
Graphics- GT=5, GT2=3
Controls- GT=4, GT2=4
Sound- GT=5, GT2=5
Replay- GT=4, GT2=5
Others- GT=3, GT2=5
FINAL WORDS BY joe14:
If you were to choose one of the two to buy, get Gran Turismo 2. Though the graphics are not the best in the world, practically everything else is. You won't regret this buy, and I promise it won't be shelved for weeks.
