| skyth's Full Review: Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2 For Windows |
Other than a few worthy exceptions, most games that are based on movies are terrible. 'Blade Runner' was a pleasant exception, and after so many insufferable Star Trek games, they also actually managed to release a good one with 'Armada'. Star Wars is another story -- some products based on the genre had enough budget to only acquire the license, and some did a pretty darn good job of having a strong license and a good game at the same time. Yeah, pretty much when a game is based on a movie, gamers end up paying for the license. Gamers that just go out and buy the products end up covering the developers license expense as well as putting some money in their pocket. The whole setting stinks of false advertising, so it was with much prejudice that I picked up Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2. Fortunately, what I had read about this game was true -- it was indeed an incredible product of intimidating innovations. Besides, it renders a 3D version of Julie and lets you do whatever you want with the camera. Game Play and Interface 10/10 Perhaps the most innovative and captivating aspect of FAKK2 is that it combines the positive elements of many other action games. Although still reminiscent of old and much tried Tomb Raider, FAKK2 is highly emphasized upon killing. The action is downright fluid, with easy to execute maneuvers and combos always available to the player. Long range weapons are definitely awesome, but what really provides an adrenaline rush is taking on your enemies with nothing but the sword. Somewhat similar to 'Die by the Sword' but more arcade-like, a whole lot bigger, and less linear. Without even finishing the first area of the game, you will also realize that good action is not the only aspect of the game play -- puzzles are also abound. Your tasks are entertaining too, unlike Soul Reaver which tried to do the same but failed due to having too many block puzzles. Graphics 10/10 Quake III looked great, played great, but gave you nothing but more of the same old. Its graphics engine required a behemoth of a computer at its time of release, but it was still more of the ugly brown-grey, brown-grey. It was truly a waste of a good engine, an unfortunate happensake that FAKK2 unequivocally fixes with its awesome use of bright, vibrant colors. The environments are a pleasure to look at, and so are the characters. The monsters are definitely Heavy Metal material, and so is our dominatrix heroine. On higher end machines, the game runs incredibly smooth. Bane of all 3D games, horrid camera angles are nonexistent throughout FAKK2. Through some clever programming trick, the camera moves to a pre-set location in hot situations that require attention to detail. So no more broken controllers. Sound FX 10/10 Although it won’t set any new standards, the sound fx in FAKK2 are also extraordinary; and, as expected, it is dominated by weapon blasts. Rainfall and other dynamic motion effects have been realistically improvised. As mentioned though, your ears will be amazed at how well they have mimicked the weapons. I have seriously begun suspecting Ritual of weapons smuggling -- these guys must have a couple of Uzi’s sitting somewhere. In addition, the voice acting is probably the best you will ever hear in a video game. Music 7/10 The musical score of the game is not really bad, but its seriously overshadowed by the excellent sound fx and graphics. Perhaps in a game of lesser class, the music of Heavy Metal could be considered great. Yet, with so many goods under its belt, I can’t say I am impressed by their choice of tracks. Story Line 9/10 The world of Heavy Metal is chaotic, which was why I never got into the whole genre. Without ever having watched the movie, or looked at any of the magazines (although I must admit to having admired the cover pictures) I was able to get into the story easily. Although a bit too linear for my taste, the story line offered is more than enough for an action/adventure game such as this. Innovation 9/10 Nothing new here. Every genre that FAKK2 touches has already been tested and tried, although not always successfully. What is great about this game is that it takes the positive elements of all these genres, and even removes some of the problems that plague most of them. Conclusion 9.5/10 This is one of the best action/adventure games available currently, and its a serious eye-candy for those that don't even play action games. Its highly recommended for anyone whose system can handle the graphics.
