| dmarusz's Full Review: Blood II The Chosen |
To this day, I'm still wondering why I was allowed to buy this game for $10. It seems like such a steal. I guess it is just getting old.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game with only a few problems, the most notable being that it crashed often in the beginning. This probably is a big turn off to most people, but after getting through the first several scenes it barely crashes at all. Obviously, not a ringing endorsement but with these first person shooter and real time action games, perfection is an unattainable ideal.
Most of the fun of Blood II revolves around the simple pleasure of shoot ‘em up action. This mixed in with witty commentary from my character(s) creates a fun loving arcade type atmosphere. I think my favorite expression by Caleb (one of the four main characters), after killing someone, was, "Victims . . . aren't we all?" I found myself making excuses to play the game. In retrospect, I guess telling my wife that I was checking the PC optimization by playing the game while she was doing the dishes was probably not one of my best.
The fun and often comical setting for this game makes you forget that you are actually killing people in an anti-hero fashion. It also takes your mind off the fact that no real plot is being developed. You're pretty much just chasing the evil cult leader Gideon and hoping that some other evil guys get in your way so you can shoot ‘em up, too. In fact, forget puzzle solving or continuity centering around why you are moving from one scene to the next. That stuff is all tertiary, right?
You can play four different characters, quite typical to most games. Each character has his or her own sets of strengths and weaknesses. I mostly played Caleb, but all seemed pretty funny and enjoyable. This game is a lot of fun for someone who just needs to let off a little frustration in our pretend PC-land.
