brenden.s.'s Full Review: Xenogears for PlayStation 1
Xenogears is one of the longest most involving RPG's I have ever had the worthiness to play. The main character is an 18 year old named Fei Fong Wong (sorry if got it wrong I only got to borrow the game for a short while) who questions about his past and who his father is. One night he goes to his freind the proffesors house when the town is attacked by about six gears (large robots that are piloted) and that's where the story take's off. I will start off with the good things about Xenogears. First the story is one of the most advanced and intriguing ones ive ever seen in a game the farther you go into the game the more it unfolds. One of the greatest features in this game is the battle system (no one button pushes to attack here!) you have to actually use combos to cause damage to do this you have to build up experience by making your own combos. To add to this great battle system is the choice to use either your gear or fight outside of it which is the only way to build up your characters combo skills. Now on to the ugly parts of the game. First the graphics are horrible one of those games with 2D sprites walking across a polygonal background (the anime movie cinemas are good though). Graphics aren't everything though especially on RPG's. The one other bad thing that I can think of is that special moves are so hard to achieve you will finish the game with only about three quarters of them. With that aside this game is a great RPG that is definitely not worth missing. This game didn't get the respect it deserved even though its one of the greatest RPG's I have ever played. So RPG fanatics should look into this game they wont be dissapointed.
