Dan and Video Games: Why I Love the Console
Sep 22 '00
Picture the following scene circa 1989:
Mom:What do you want for Christmas Daniel?
Lil' Dan: I want I Nintendo. (what else would a self-respecting 8 year old want?)
Mom: Daniel, we have the computer for you to play games on.
Lil' Dan: awww man!
Scene change,1993
Mom: What do you want for Christmas Dan?
Adolescent Dan: I want a Super Nintendo.
Mom: What about computer games?
Adolescent Dan: (under breath) Stupid Mom!
Finally in 1998 yes, 1998 at the age of 17 I got my first console. Let me tell you, I played my fair share of computer games. After I got my Playstation I've never gone back to PC. I've tried, but I just can't do it.
I think the biggest advantage of the console is the social aspect of it. When was the last time that you and three buddies all huddled around the ol' keyboard? Sure PCs have online games (of course so does Dreamcast now) but really, is beating up on your buddy when he's across town as much fun as beating him (or her) when he's right next to you on the couch? I think not. Who would want to use a monitor when you have the bigscreen sitting idle? Also, computers cause this bad feeling that instead of fooling around you should be typing or something.
Console games are also quite a bit simpler. I really don't want to have to figure out 85 different keyboard combinations (To activate the missile defense system use left arrow+alt+tab) to play one game. Maybe I'm just dumb but I like the D-pad and six buttons just fine. When I'm flying my spaceship all I'm really concerned about is shooting down baddies. I could really give a rip about my yaw rate and my thrust ratio, much less how to change them. I guess the issue depends on personal taste. If you like to control every aspect of everything in the game then play PC. If you want more mindless entertainment get a console, I know that's what I want!
Some may argue that the PC has a much wider selection of games and this is true to a certain extent, but the consoles are changing from their platform dominated past. It used to be if you had a console and wanted to play an adventure game you were out of luck. No more!
Lastly, nothing beats the price. Hey, why not buy all the major consoles, you'll still end up paying less than a good PC.
