Stop Blaming Games!

May 23 '00 (Updated May 24 '00)

It seems in todays society whenever something goes wrong, people try to blame something other than themselves. They blame the media, they blame gun control laws, they blame games, etc.

When people resort to extreme violence in REAL life, it is usually caused by excessive amounts of stress or mental imbalances.

There are images of violence all around us, all the time. Humanity thrives on violence. Look at ancient times, the battles of the gladiators. Look at everything today. Movies, games, television shows (talk shows, real-life cop shows, disaster shows, etc) There is an inherent excitement in violence, a thrill that most people do not get in their everyday life. We thrive on conflict, it is human nature. But to turn around and blame video games is just plain ridiculous. If you try banning those, then you'll have to start banning just about everything! All television shows (they must be the cause of teenage pregnancy!), all movies (heck, even Bugs Bunny hits people, get him off the air!) etc. Hey, on nature programs animals fight and kill each other, maybe that's the cause?! Oh, wait, no, that's not it! It's the military, with all their wars and guns. I know, let's ban the military!

The problem with the general public and even the government is that they react incorrectly to a lot of situations. Look at the columbine incident. Right after that all the schools jumped at the chance to add metal detectors, guards, etc. Well, all that does is create the atmosphere of violence, of living in fear. Those reactions produced results that will more than likely actually lead to more violence, not lesson it. And do you really think some low-paid security guard with a small-caliber pistol is going to be able to stop a group of determined messed up psychos with heavy weapons? I doubt it! Would metal detectors have helped columbine? NO. The kids were going to shoot people no matter what.

What about tougher gun control laws you say? Well, think about this. Laws are created so that we have rules and morals to follow, guidelines. The flaw in increasing laws to combat crime is that criminals don't obey laws! They didn't obey laws in the first place, why would new ones make them any different??!! That's ridiculous!

The problem with society today is not games, it's not drugs, it's not the media. The problem today is the society itself, the way we are set up. We are a capitalist nation. This results in a small minority controlling a majority of the power and money. The remainder of the population is stuck needing both parents working, resulting in their not being able to properly care for their children, because they need to work to make ends meet. People in this society work too hard as it is, without all these corporations trying to figure out ways to get people to work harder. People need more social, luxury and family time. It's as simple as that.
