This is a game for the coordinated and resourceful. People who don't like this game usually hate it because they cannot move in a straight line using the N64 controller. Keeping that in mind, I will tell you why this the best of N64.
Single player
First, the missions are based off of the movie Goldeneye. Some missions are remarkably close to what you see happening in the movie while others are changed more and a few were added in. However, each mission you are James Bond with an objective to do. Not only must you stay alive, but you must complete certain task such as meet people and keep non-military casualties low. Some missions are pretty straight forward while others are quite complicated. Adding to that, there are three difficulty levels for you to beat the entire game. Each level adds more tasks and harder opponents. The single player mode by itself makes for a great N64 game.
Multi-player
This is the sweet icing laid thick on this cake. This game will make you want to have all four controllers. You can play in 2, 3, or 4 players in different areas some based off missions in the game and others are just created for the multi-player mode. You can play several different styles:

Normal: you vs. opponent(s) with the objective to score the most points (kills minus suicides)

You only live twice: you have two lives and last remaining wins

The Living Daylights (flag tag): you find the flag and run from your opponent(s) person who holds the flag the longest wins

The Man With the Golden Gun: There is one Golden Gun (gun kills with one hit) on the board, and you and your opponent(s) play normal except for the one Golden Gun

License To Kill: One shot kills, play normal

Team 2 vs 2, 2 vs 1, or 3 vs 1: a great way to even out who keeps winning definitely the most fun way to play this game in my opinion

You can also set the normal game length: first to 5, 10, or 20 points, 5, 10, or 20 minutes, or unlimited. Furthermore, you decide what group of weapons you want. For example, you choose pistols, and a variety of hand guns are hidden throughout the board. There is a distinct hierarchy of weapons in each group.
Multi-player mode allows the most resourceful to win. With the ability to bounce grenades, blast explosive weapons through walls, set mines, or just out maneuver your opponent, the winner has a combination of brains, skill, and luck in order to win. Anyhow, multi-player is definitely the best part of this game.
