charlie419's Full Review: Xenogears for PlayStation 1
Well, what we have here is a game that all of a sudden came through with all of the publicity given to the Final Fantasy series (notably FFVII and FFVIII), and given Square's reputation, you can't help but hope for the best. Once again, they didn't disappoint. Actually, SquareSoft was deciding about bringing this title to the United States, but in the end they made the right decision. Xenogears went relatively unknown to the general public (I never even saw one commercial for it) but turns out to be one of the greatest RPG's this gamer has ever played. The story is heavy, and I mean HEAVY. It may even take you another run-around through the game to even fully understand it.
You are Fei Fong Wong, a supposed orphan who never knew his family, expect the sketchy past of his father. After an incident at the town he was raised since he was abandoned, he is exiled and goes out on a quest filled with love, violence, and realizations. Many supporting characters are at your command, but none more confusing than Fei, who is a bit of a hot head and likes to jump into things without knowing the consequences. The battle system is where the game shines. You pilot "gears" which are huge battle machines which just look cool, but not so much as in a different Square game just released. You choose between three different types of attacks, each varying in strength. You also fight hand-to-hand, but gear battles are just much more exciting. The graphics aren't so hot, I have to admit. Heavy slowdown occurs throughout the game. Nevertheless, if you are ready to plunge into a deep RPG full of mystery, then Xenogears is definitely for you. Just be prepared to spend lots of hours in this, as it is extremely deep.
