After the Odyssey 2 my parents bought a Colecovision. I thought it was the coolest and still think it is pretty neat or I would not have bothered to emulate it on my new computer.
The advantages of the Colecovision over the standard Atari 2600 were many. Colecovision carts had supperior sound and graphics. Some of them were even supperior to many later Nintendo carts.
Also the Colecovision had an expansion port which was way ahead of its time when you consider Sega and other game companies later used similar technology. With this expansion port you could add a number of modules. The only one I am familiar with first hand is the one which allowed you to play Atari 2600 games. This allowed you to add the vast library of atari games to the ones available for the Colecovision.
The Colecovision's major drawback was the controllers which came with the system. These were odd and hard to control. I actually prefer to play the old Coleco games on my computer via emulator rather than on the original system due to this. I can use a game pad or even the keyboard much better than I could ever use those clumbsy controls.
But the controls did allow for some at that time pretty revolutionary things like more advanced options like how hard you wanted the game to be or how fast. Things that on an Atari you had to press a button a few times to scroll through you could just press a number on the Coleco to get it done instantly.
I continued to collect carts for this system and its Atari Addon well after the system was off the market and considered obsolete. Why? because the playability was there and the game system was made so well.
