| tadow's Full Review: Atari Jaguar |
The Atari Jaguar stumbled out the door of Atari with a limited release on the East and West Coasts only at first. The system came with a pak-in game Cybermorph which was pretty impressive at the time as the polygon phase was just gearing up.
I bought my Atari Jaguar as soon as it hit the stores here in Chicago and I was I was impressed with from day one. Remember at the time the psx was still not out. The other options were the SNES and Genesis. They went on to release the Jaguar CD attachment that has a very cool VLM (Visual Light Machine)which display's an aray of graphics to the beat of an audio cd, this was built into the Jag CD. The other devices they released were the Pro Controller, AV cables, Jag-Link, Team Tap. Another device made by a 3rd party company was the Catbox. This device adds alot of features to your Jaguar such as: composite video jacks, ability to hook up a moniter, headphone jack and most of all Networking for Battlesphere and Aircars. It will also work for Doom but no different than a Jaglink. With Battlesphere up to 32 players can play and Aircars up to 8.
They started off with some basic games then appeared Alien vs. Predator which is one of the only games to give me the chills while playing it, that's how great this game is. Doom was also out around the same time. I talked my brother into buying a Jaguar and we got the Jag Link and went to town in deathmatch doom and my parents thought we were fighting as we would yell at each other down the hall.(lol) There's also the 2000 series for the Jaguar they are Tempest 2000, Breakout 2000, Defender 2000 all of these are great games as well. Other games you need to play if your getting or have a Jaguar are: Atari Karts, NBA Jam T.E., WORMS, Iron Soilder 1 and 2(cart or cd), Primal Rage CD, Powerdrive Rally, Rayman, Ultra Vortek, Theme Park, Battlemorph CD, and World Tour Racing there's also a few games that have came out in the past year by Songbird Productions they are Protector, Soccer Kid, Hyperforce and Skyhammer you can find these at http://songbird.atari.net/
The other game to arrive in the past year is prehaps one of the best games brought to the Jaguar, Battlesphere is an all around awesome game and shows the power of the Jaguar you'll be hard pressed in finding one of these though.
Atari had alot of ideas and prototypes in the works at the time of there demise. Some of actual working protos are the Jag VR Headset it was made by Virtuality, JVM (Jaguar Voice modem) it allowed for on-line gaming and the only game that supports it is Ultra Vortek you can also talk as your playing sharing the same bandwith. They had alot of things that had great promise.
In the end the Jaguar is a great buy and a great system i'm not saying every game is great but it has plenty to offer along the lines of gameplay and fun factor. It was and is sad to see Atari come to an end with the Jaguar but the cat isn't dead yet as plenty of people are working on titles to be released in the near future.
For anyone interested in seeing many pics of prototypes, games etc head over to the best Jag site on the net:
