The phone rang late one evening. I answered, expecting to get an offer for 2 months free if I switch phone services.
"Hello."
"Hey, it's me."
"Oh, what's up man?"
"I got it."
".....No!"
"I just hooked it up."
"I'll be over in 10 minutes."

That was the exact conversation I had with a buddy of mine the day after Playstation 2 came out. To say it was the most anticipated game release ever...is completely true. In fact Sony's little box is one of the most anticipated products in history. Only 500,000 were shipped to the US, and now you're lucky if you can find one on the street for double the retail price.
What could cause so much uproar? A little box you play games with? Well, don't forget the DVD. I played PS2 for a few hours myself, and to say I was blown away is a complete understatement. Yes, I was a bit disappointed at first. Then I realized I was playing an old Playstation game, what an idiot. I popped in Madden 2001 (I just thought I should point out the fact that Madden 2000 is my favorite game of all time). I was expecting it to be just like Madden 2000, with some better graphics, more replays, in-depth commentary, more franchise options, and some more plays to go through. Basically I was expecting Madden 2000 with a few improvements. What I got was a totally new game. I wasn't disappointed though. I'm proud to say that Madden 2001 is the greatest game ever made :)
But I'm not reviewing a game, I'm reviewing the system. The controls are the same as Playstation, which came as a surprise because rarely do two systems use the same controls. Anyway, the graphics on some of the games I tried are purely awesome. A small step up from Dreamcast with little differences here and there. Need an example? In Madden 2001, it actually looks like video when they show replays. How's that for life like? Also the sound is a big improvement, it's always crisp, clear, and loud. Definitely the best yet.
Now there's been a lot of talk about the DVD capability. Despite some rumors to non-PS2 owners, the system currently does play DVD's. Now I'm not really an expert here, to be quite honest I don't own a DVD player. In fact, I've only seen 1 DVD movie. But I did watch The Patriot and Green Mile on the Playstation 2. Any skips? Nope. Look like a computer screen? Nope. Incredibly clear picture and sound? Yep. The movie experience is so much better on the PS2 than any video and even on my friend's $150 DVD player. Yes, there may be better DVD players out there, but if you currently don't have one there's no need to buy one AND the PS2. I mean c'mon, you wouldn't trust a DVD player made by Sony?
The only problems encountered were the slow load time for a few games along with a skip or two in video during play. Also, while playing Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (made for the original Playstation), all the writing turned to Japanese once in a while. I'm not sure if this occurred on the old Playstation or not, but it was a pain for us. These problems are few and far between though.
Playstation 2 is without a doubt the best game system ever. Now if only I could find one!
