marcmerica's Full Review: Mega Man 8 for PlayStation 1
The Mega Man series just may be my favorite series of all time when it comes to video games. The games are fun, the music is always great, and Mega Man is just a cool guy, and Dr. Wily is more evil every time I see him (well maybe not, but he's still mean). I have beaten all the games, 1 through 8. I own each one except for 1 and 8. The first I don't own because I didn't get it when it originally came out, and I refuse to pay 15-20 bucks for a NES game on ebay, I don't care what it is. Mega Man 8 I do not own, because it is horrible. Simply put, it is a disgrace to the Mega Man series.
We all know how the Mega Man games go by now, this one isn't any different. I'm not going to fault the game for that because I like how the Mega Man games are side-scrolling (which is a lost art these days, why?). Some people may get tired of the same-old basic idea, I don't. Instead, I'll fault it for just about everything else.
Let's start with the graphics. There are some animations scenes, which aren't bad. That is, until I heard a voice. What the hell happened to Mega Man? His voice is played by a little girl! What is that? If anyone remembers the Captain-N cartoons, recall the deep voice Mega Man had in those - that's how Mega Man should sound. Dr. Light sounds like Elmer Fudd ("Dr. Wiwy!" ouch...)
Meanwhile, the rest of the game hardly looks better than your typical SNES game. The levels about the way they should be, although you can breeze through them.
Play control - not too bad. I'd say it's about what we've all to come expect. Matter of minutes to get used to, then you'll be blasting through the levels in no time.
I can't rate the sounds well because of the voice acting. The robots sound terrible, aside from the animation sequences. It's impossible not to notice, and you'll probably end up laughing more than you'll be taking the taunts and threats seriously. The sound effects are decent enough.
The challenge is not there. Some Mega Man games have been very easy to work through (1, 2, 6) while others have been pretty tough (3, 4). This one is one of the easier ones. I rented it and finished it off within a day, I can't see most people needing more than a few days as well.
Take a look at this one only if you're a huge Mega Man. I would recommend you play just about any Mega Man game before you try this - that includes the X series as well, which is also very good. Don't pick it up unless it's extremely cheap and you're a diehard fan of Mega Man.
