| wicked_souls's Full Review: Cruisn Usa for Nintendo 64 |
One day, I went to the bowling alley. When I walked into the arcade, I saw a machine. Much like the driver's seat of a car. It was a game called Cruis'n USA. So, I decided to get some tokens and play it. It wasn't the BEST cruise I'd ever taken, but it was good enough.
Then, Nintendo, with their big, fancy N64, decided to make it into a console game. I played it. Just about the same. But smaller. And easier. And cheaper (believe me, you would be spending a lot more than $30-50 in tokens to beat the arcade game).
So, after just playing it, ramming my Italian sports car into a police car on the Freeway, I decided to write a review on it.
Gameplay
Cruis'n USA isn't so bad when it comes to gameplay. Ramming into other cars, causing them to spin out. Running over trees and launching barrels off of the screen. It also has customizable controls, which is good for those who want to accelerate with Z and those who want to accelerate with A. Jeez, you can even accelerate with R. But, the rewards aren't the best; you get a new colored car that goes a little bit faster each TWO difficulty levels. Eh, it's still good.
Graphics
Okay, the gameplay is good, but the graphics are... well... not so good. The cars are done well, however. Gotta love the Jeep. But, some of the cars aren't done so well. For example, the neutral school bus looks normal, but the school bus YOU drive as is pretty squashed. And, all the trees, signs, and people they show are flat pixel screens that constantly look in your direction. When you run over a tree, it kind of sits on the ground, flat as a board. And that isn't the best looking. But, oh well.
Sound
Well, the sound would be a 50/50. The sounds of the engine revving and hitting barrels is good, along with a car running past you. But, some of it is pretty stupid, too. The sound of your car hitting a tree sounds kind of like someone folding a piece of paper. Not only that, but there are some annoying voiceovers, especially when "We're gonna crash!". But, these mostly happen when you hit a bump, and then some stupid lady says "Woah!". Some of the music is good, but most of it is annoying (stupid hillbilly song).
Replay Value
Well, the replay value is pretty good. It's fun, ramming into cars and running over barrels all the time. The races are really quite fun, actually. So, the replay value is pretty good... Yeah...
Overall
This game is by far NOT the best racing game. However, it is by far NOT the worst. It's got some pretty horrible graphics, but fun barrels. Bad sound, but traffic. Oh, well. I give this game a three.
