I've spent over 200 hours playing RR Tycoon 2 and think it is a great game. It is not for everyone; it is for people who like to work with complex systems and make them work and for people with an interest in Railroad history.
Many of the scenarios are designed so that you encounter the same challenges and rewards as the real life railroad. It can be quite satisfying to win a gold medal after spending hours figuring out a scenario; and it is rewarding to setup an efficient, profitable railroad.
Downsides, this game take a long time to learn and master. The game is quite complex. To really master the game it is necessary to learn a lot of details about costs and the revenue for various loads. Many people may be turned off to this level of study and detail. If you like to study profit and loss statements and manage scheduling details; this game is for you. I think this is reflected in the fan base of this game. There are a few people who really love the game and a lot of people who find it boring or too complicated.
There are a number of web sites with hints. I suggest reading them all thoroughly after playing a few games. They will help to improve your game.
