THE NBA LIVE series is still the best out there. Showtime is fine if you're into arcade style, but NBA Shootout just sucks. Live 2000 is a lot more realistic than Live 99, and that takes a little getting used to.
The computer can D you up pretty good, so you have to watch out. Good jumpershooters are key in this game because a pumpfake can get the defender up in the air so that you can drive, shoot an mid-range shot, or take the jumper while he's coming down. The gameplay is pretty good - I don't run all of those plays and stuff (does anyone?), but it's still fun. The computer will draw charges, get in your face, light you up with some offensive rebounds if you're not careful.
The buttons are the same for NBA 2000 as NBA Live 99 so if you're used to this line, it's a cinch to learn. Otherwise it may take you a while. They've added the Select button this time, which lets you call for a double team on defense and call for a pick on offense, which I find really convenient. The select button is a long reach though, I wish they had made it a L2-L1 combination or something like that.
One annoying feature of this game is the animations you have during free throws (the close-up and the high-five) that you need to hit Start to skip - it can get pretty distracting at times. Free throws are still too easy, even easier than in Live 99, and the computer is still too easy to beat.
Will they ever be able to make it so that the crowd doesn't look fake? so that Jason Williams won't block dunks? make certain players only take shots they would normally take in real life? I'd also like to see Coaches pacing up and down the sidelines and running refs that give animated calls. I don't think that would be too hard. Taunting fans and dancing mascots would be neat too.
I like the occasional airballs, but free throws never bounce in, which is kinda frustrating. In this version, L2 + circle is dunk, L2 + square is layup and I don't know what the heck triangle is for - some ugly runner kind of thing. Another problem is that if the other team makes lineup changes you can't change your matchups to adjust to their lineup - it keeps the starters in there...
Michael Jordan's 1-on-1 challenge is a neat feature - one I still think they should have for all-star weekend! The legends teams are really neat too, a fun feature of this edition. Try playing the 60s homecourt without a 3-point line!
Oh yeah, the music is funky, some naughty by nature and some sweet boxing announcements (random?)...plus cool shots of some nba stars playing around with the ball while you're loading the games up.
I recommend this game, I hope you enjoy it!
