I have beaten every final fantasy EVER made. This is the first time that I didn't enjoy it. Graphics are out of this world but graphics aren't everything. I was so disappointed with this, ESPECIALLY, after FF7. After Final Fantasy 6, I didn't think it got any better than that. Boy, was I wrong. FF7 blew me away. After the hype of it, FF8 reared its ugly head in the media and became an instant success... only because of the Final Fantasy name.
Strong Side: The game is set in the distant future where massive structures called gardens exist. Here people are trained to do whatever they want really. A mad witch is in town and causes corruption and your job is to take the skank out ASAP. Well, to begin with, the graphics speak for themselves. Out of this world, great, fantastic, bla, bla, bla, wonderful. The game is long to beat grant it that and it's set in a massive world. It even goes into outer space. All the while the graphics are breath taking. The music was awesome. Top notch I must say. Each piece of music matched the event taking place very well. I am impressed with the music.
The storyline is good, not great. The system of magic was interesting. I thought it to be cool but nothing more. I'm bashing this game even in the strong side of it because it doesn't have the feel that the other FF's had. If people have played the series from the beginning then they too understand that the game isn't great. I do recommend this game but I also strongly recommend a better game such as Final Fantasy 7. Please don't get me wrong... this is a good game. It's just not a good Final Fantasy game.
Weak Side: Replay value is a given for all RPGs so that doesn't hurt it too much. Storyline is good, not great which is sad because that's usually Squaresoft's strength. The others had twists and turns at every corner that you'd never expect. But this... this is pretty much straight forward which is a bad thing. It made the game bland and uninteresting. I didn't like how Squall's final attack jocked Cloud's omnislash... get your own damn move.
The fighting got repetitive. It put me to sleep a few times. A major focus of the game was a mini card game... Squaresoft, nobody cares about a card game. What we want is a solid RPG. That is the reason this has gone to dirt. I haven't yet played FF9 but I heard its back on track with the others. I hope so because Square shouldn't lose it's reputation with a game like this one. Once again, I do repeat, this isn't a bad game.. it's just not a good final fantasy game.
