| LisaDo's Full Review: Roller Coaster Tycoon For Windows |
I love this game. I received it for Christmas from my parents. We bought our computer at the end of November and this was my first computer game. I had seen it in the stores and knew I had to have it!
As it turned out, this is a great game. There was another on the market as well, Theme Park, but I didn't care for the looks of the game. They say not to judge a book by it's cover, but that is exactly what I did. When I put the two side by side, RollerCoaster Tycoon just looked like it had better graphics and was a better quality. At the time I didn't know anyone that had either, so I was judging entirely by what the box looked like and the description of the games.
Rollercoaster Tycoon didn't take long at all to install and learn to play. There is a book that comes with it that explains everything that you can and need to do.
What I like about this game is that it has the rides pre-made, or in the cases of the rollercoasters, you can build your own. I have no imagination for this and prefer to use the pre-made rollercoasters. If you can low on money, you can ask for a loan, up to a certain amount. It varies with each level.
The parks all have their own challenges. From rugged turrain to the park being a bunch of islands. You can raise and lower the water and land. In most cases, you can expand your parks size by buying extra property. You can also lease the property, in a few parks. Get permission to build.
There are lots of thing you can place in your park. There are the rides, of course, but also an information kiosk, hamburger stands, soda stands, cotton candy stands, french fry stall, ice cream stall, pizza stall, Popcorn stall, and of course bathrooms. You can charge what they suggest of raise and lower the prices as much as you want. You can also charge admission to the park or make it free. They also have a "helper" that comes along the bottom of your screen that tells you that people are getting lost and need help finding the exit, when rides break down, when paths are nasty and need to be cleaned, and when a promotion that you start(if you do so) has ended.
You have to remember to hire Mechanics to do repairs and maintenance on your rides, Handymen to mow, water flowers, empty trash, and sweep the paths. Optional people to hire are Security Guards and Entertainers. The can be in one of three different costumes. A Panda, a tiger or an elephant. They walk around the park and try to keep your guests happy.
I also like that you can click on a guest and it will tell you how long they have been in the park, what they have left in money, what they started with, what they spent it on and how happy they are. If they aren't happy, it will have a couple of different bars telling you how hungry they are, how thirsty, if they have to go to the bathroom and how tired they are. This gives you a pretty good idea of what your park needs more of. Bathrooms and such.
You even have a place where you decide how much money goes into research for new rides and what type. Gentle(like the Merry-go-Round), Water(water slides), Thrill(Scrambled Eggs-like the Scrambler at any fair), Rollercoaster(duh), themes for your park(Roman and more) and ride improvements(more car options for some rides and extra pieces of track for rollercoasters). You can allow nothing, 100$, 200$, and 400$ a month. The more you put in, the more ride options you will get and faster. I put it on 400$ and get a new ride about once a "month". Each option will run out of ideas after a while for each level.
You do have one thing you have to do to "win" each level to open up more level farther down on the list you can choose from. Each level has a goal. You have to either have a certain number of people in your park by a certain date, have you park value be a certain amount, or both. They give you a date and there is a little box in the bottom right hand corner of your screen telling you which year and month you are in. If you hold your mouse over it, it will tell you what day it is exactly. That same box also tells you how hot it is outside and what the weather is like.
This is a game that would be fun for about any age. Kids can learn budgeting and use their imaginations about what rides to put where. I just like to make a profitable park. It is a fun and fairly simple game to use. I have had it for almost a year and still play it at least once a week.
