Its a 500lb Game in a 5lb box!!!
Oh the 80's. Aside from the tight pants and leather jackets, we had Arcade games! What kid didn't spend all his time and quarters, plastered to Mario Bros. or Donkey Kong in the corner of the local Peter Piper Pizza?
No pizza for me, Mom. Can I have some more quarters?
I was thrilled the day my cousin got his new Coleco. At first, I had no clue what it is, or how to properly pronounce it. None of that mattered, however, when he told me that it meant having Donkey Kong at home on the TV! I had to try it!
We must have played that game for hours, and beat it several times. It was amazing. They took a 500 pound arcade came, removed the quarter slot, and packaged it in a tiny plastic cartridge!
It did, however, take me a while to warm up to that awful controller. This was nothing like the Atari joystick I was used to. It looked like you could place phone calls in the middle of your Donkey Kong match. (The Coleco controllers had phone style buttons, and even the curly cord to boot.) I spent lots of time looking at the buttons I was pressing, rather than watching Mario leap burning barrels.
The controller was my only gripe. It was awkward, and nothing like what I was used to. I eventually warmed up to it, which leaves only one more con. The outrageous price. It cost over $200 when it first came out. Of course now I know why my parents never bought one, and we stuck to our Atari. It didn't matter all that much to me anyway, would just visit my cousin.
Overall, the consol was fairly short lived, and the only game for it that I liked was Donkey Kong. It was over priced, and probably released too soon for a good price tag. On the other hand, the Coleco downsized arcade games and made them fit in the living room. Not bad. Not bad at all...
