Intro: 1999 was a great year for Playstation and for gamers all over the world. New characters and franchises were established in this year and old ones were brought back to life once again. And now I have carefully scrutinized games that really held my attention. So please read my Top Ten Playstation Games of 㥫 list, and feel free to leave comments about games you believe are some of the best of 㥫. Enjoy! 10. FIFA 2000: Major League Soccer I dont really play a lot of sports games for my Playstation, but the sports series that I definitely enjoy the most from EA Sports has to be FIFA. This arcade/sim soccer game has hundreds of teams and tons of options that can be customized to make life more convenient. The graphics dont look that clean and up close players lack detail and appear choppy. The sound effects are great, but the commentary doesnt make the game come to life. The game runs very smooth and the result is some non-stop adrenaline rushing sports action. The control is similar to its previous predecessors with a couple of new features and moves added. The ability to customize your own teams, players, tournaments, and cups is perhaps FIFA 2000s biggest strength. 9. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Perhaps the most underrated Playstation game of 㥫. Soul Reaver boasts great visuals and gameplay to die for. The whole adventure is long and very challenging. With tons of baddies, huge levels, cool power-ups, and a deep story; Soul Reaver will keep adventure fans intrigued for many hours. The fighting system requires you to kill monsters with a handful of weapons and items. Soul Reaver is breathtaking with its large detailed environments and equally impressive cut-scenes. The voice acting is some of the best youll hear, and the music sets the mood for the game and its gothic story. Perhaps the only drawback to this puppy is that some parts of the game seem a little Tomb Raiderish (block puzzles), which might be a turnoff for some gamers. 8. Final Fantasy VIII To tell you the truth, RPGs arent my thang. But Final Fantasy VIII is an awesome game. The graphics are perhaps the best the Playstation has to showcase. The sound effects are okay, while the music is great. Gameplay wise, the game is almost the same as FF7. The materia has been substituted by a more complex junction system, and a new draw and stock option has been added. New characters and a more adult oriented story does make the series a little livelier though. Expectations were high, maybe a little too high for FF8, and in the end the game lacked that certain charm and style that made FF7 popular amongst all gamers. Still a fun, yet flawed RPG. 7. Ridge Racer Type 4 Arcade racing at its best! This game delivers high speed racing with hundreds of cars, 8 tracks, and four racing teams to choose from. The Grand Prix mode is definitely the heart and soul of the game. Graphically the game is a masterpiece. Its beautifully designed courses, smooth framerate, nicely detailed car models, and cool replays puts R4 up there with some of the best looking games on the system. The control is dead-on and the analog control is perfect. R4 includes a bumping soundtrack that borders many genres of music that include Jazz, Rock, Techno, and Funk. The 2-player mode is also a great addition to the game and plays just as good as the 1-player modes. R4 does have its faults: its unintelligent computer AI makes the game too easy, and gamers who like to tinker under the hoods of cars will be disappointed since the game offers a minute selection of car options. 6. Resident Evil 3 Nemesis Every year a new Resident Evil comes out and some how they (Capcom) still manage to bring the same excitement and entertainment as the one before. This time around you are Jill Valentine and the story takes place 24 hours before and after part two. The graphics are slightly improved over the second, and the CG movies are a little bit more polished. New features such as dodging, a 180-degree turn, the ability to blow up nearby objects, and mixing ammo are a welcoming addition to the series. The puzzles are still there, and the number of zombies and monsters throughout the game is greatly increased. The game plays at a good pace, but veterans might move through the game rather quickly. The sound is excellent and the voice acting stays with that same B movie quality. The control has basically remained the same, which isnt a bad thing if youve played the other Resident Evils. 5. Syphon Filter Espionage fans have been blessed with another great action title. Syphon Filters gameplay is unbelievable. The story is good, and the game has some good graphics and sound. Syphon Filter contains some highly explosive levels of action. The weapons are very cool and the objectives for each mission are very diverse. The enemy AI is solid and the stealth walking system plays well. The hard difficulty curve and realistic gameplay elements for each level is what makes Syphon Filter enjoyable. So dont expect to beat this game in a couple of hours. The only major flaw that Syphon Filter suffers from is its somewhat sloppy control. 4. Silent Hill Silent Hill does something that Resident Evil cant do, and that is have you scared and on the edge of your seat every second throughout the entire game. Unlike the look of Resident Evil, Silent Hill uses 3D backgrounds and the game is viewed via a third person perspective. The whole atmosphere of the game is quite frightening. The game uses grotesque imagery that really leaves you speechless. The voice acting is decent and the sound effects are amazing. Controlling your character is hard at first, but not as difficult as in other games of its kind. The story is engrossing and will keep you playing until the end. One of Playstation's most twisted games. Period. 3. Driver What do you get when you combine undercover cops, 4 authentic cities, and some off the wall police chases. Driver proves that driving/action games are a treat to play, especially in 3D. The graphics arent perfect (slowdown and pop-up issues), and the sound is average, but it surely makes up for its setbacks with innovating gameplay elements and some spectacular getaway chases scenes. Driver packs in 40 intense missions, each with their own objectives. There are plenty of other extra modes that will you keep you occupied. If the game was polished a bit more (like improving the graphics and making a better interesting story), Driver easily could have been the best game of 㥫. 2. Medal of Honor High quality first person shooters on the Playstation are scarce. Games of its type usually suffer from major graphics problems and repetitive gameplay. But Medal of Honor has broken that boundary and successfully proves that FPSs can be made for home consoles. MoHs top-notch presentation, brilliant AI, and amazing sound will leave you awestruck. The whole epic journey through Germany is fun and will provide you with hours of senseless killing and strategic warfare. The sound is probably the most innovating feature. Bullets sound so real you can almost feel them past by you, and the climatic score makes the game very suspenseful. On the other hand MoH has some distinct flaws such as its somewhat shallow 2-player mode and lack of replayability 1. Tony Hawks Pro Skater The game plays like a dream, literally. Everything about it is unique and first-rate. The control is superb, the sound effects are awesome (lets not forget about its killer soundtrack), and the gameplay blew other skateboarding games away by a zillion miles. THPS offers a load of tracks, 10 pro-skaters, an entertaining 2-player vs. mode, and some beautifully designed levels. Lets just put it this way, THPS practically revolutionized the extreme sports genre. It also did something that few games have a hard time doing, making a game that is different from the rest and providing gamers with original and long lasting gameplay. |
