Increasing realism of violence

Mar 16 '00

As technology increases at such a rapid rate, computers are constantly being pumped up with new CPU's, video/sound cards, moniters, hardrives, and RAM. Because of this boom the entire computer software industry seemingly followed. Software company's need to stay competitive and games are no exception. Gamers want the newest, greatest, most violent game around.

With these games following the demand of gamers, violence and realism, which before didn't actually play hand at hand, has merged into a extremely violent genre. This all may or may not outrage you, but you should know the reasons games are becoming so increasingly violent. This leads me to one conclusion.

Games are getting violent because people WANT them to. If people didn't want them to be violent no games would make it in the industry. Some people hate violent games and some love it, but when does one group say to another that they are wrong? War has been within the world from the beginning of man's history, and nothing save a great miracle ( or catastrophe ) can change that.

A new game which is to be released soon, Soldier of Fortune, has a great violence/realism factor. Nearly all my computer playing friends either played it or heard of it. It is so realistic that shots even do special target damage. So a shot to the arm is different than a shot to the groin or head. With many target locations to hit, this game is VERY realistic. But this does not mean that these people will kill people trying to emulate their favorite game. They, in fact, are a successful part of society. They play for the pure cause of enjoyment and virtual violent interaction with other people. This could be a way of releasing anger or basic urges in life. But that, I suppose, is for the scientists to "prove" with their studies.

If this article angers you and you wish to respond, please wait a couple hours before doing so. In doing so you can clearly explain your side without the need of angering the other side too.
