| phungus's Full Review: Atari 7800 |
First off, you should know that I actually own an Atari 7800 unit. I just purchased it from Ebay and have more games coming. I also own an Atari Jaguar and a 2600. I'm what you might call an old school gamer.
The 7800 was another of Atari's many stupid, idiotic business mistakes. They made it to compete with the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), but it never took off. It didn't have the software support that NES had, and I think people were just looking for something new.
The 7800 was backwards compatible with the 2600 games, meaning you could play all your old 2600 games on this system. All the old controllers work as well. Now THAT was a good idea...too bad they didn't think of it when they released the 5200.
I read this on an Atari site: Some developers came to Atari with a gamepad design and the execs HATED it. They didn't think people would want to play with anything that didn't have a stick on it. BIG MISTAKE! Anyhow, Atari later released a gamepad but it was too late for this doomed system.
These things go for roughly 50-60 bucks on Ebay, and make sure you get one that comes with a power adapter, because the atari one has some sort of weird non-standard plug.
