| NMD85's Full Review: Cruisn Usa for Nintendo 64 |
Midway and Nintendo's smash arcade hit, Cruis'n USA hits the N64 on launch dated and unimpressive. For N64's birth, the system has a bunch of passable games that were very expensive. Choosing the right one was not easy considering in those days you had to shell out a booming $60-$70 for one state-of-the-art N64 cartridge. Now N64 had some powerful launch games not worth missing like Super Mario 64, Star Wars, Wave Race, and a few more. But then there was the passable titles, and unfourtunetly Cruis'n USA feel into that category. I am a big Cruis'n fan, I recently purchased the recent Cruis'n Exotica (look for my review soon).
Let's get down to the bottom lines of Cruis'n USA. The graphics, pretty decent, framerates slow and awful, mostly dated 1994 "Ultra 64" arcade rehashes done fairly... the arcade triumphs still. Sound, sub-par, awful music (hire a musician for pete's sake) and below par sound effects. Control, only one style, accelerate with Z, steer with the analog stick, takes about one brain cell to get from Point A to point B. Playability, abysmally repetitive, yes you might find yourself cross the same bridge 3-4 times, and take the same turn 3-4 times, levels have too much of a resemblance to each other.... like the Grand Canyon looks like Arizona... virtually awful and redundant. The cars are awfully pitiful from a ugly set of old cars and snoozer secret cars (woo! now I can drive a school bus!) Cruis'n USA will be shelved in less than a week, make it a rental if you must.
Since I am a Cruis'n fan, I won't sell my current copy of the game but Cruis'n World and Exotica are so very much better and more enjoyable.
