| magika's Full Review: Unreal Tournament for Windows |
Put quite simply, Unreal Tournament edition is the best first person shooter I have had the opportunity to play. I tinkered with Doom, Doom II, Quake, Quake II and a few others that never became popular. None of them caught my attention enough to play more then a couple of times. Then I tried this game.
The intro starts things in the right mood with a swooping view of an incredibly rendered swooping view of one of the maps. Amazingly detailed textures, lighting, and reflections along with some of the smoothest animation I had seen in a game. When I found out that the same graphical quality was present in the game itself, not just the intro, my jaw dropped. The character animations are just as fluid, not to mention accurate. I still haven't found the types of rendering errors that make it obvious that you're working with imperfect polygons. I'm still impressed.
Of course, you can't make a good game with just graphics; you have to have game play. Unreal Tournament has a varied and balanced set of weaponry that makes the game an excellent challenge. And for when you can't find an opponent, or not enough to make things interesting, the bots are smart enough to take aimed shots when they can, run when they need to, shoot wildly while running to keep your head down, go for healing or armor when it's around and otherwise act like a dangerous opponent. No other game has provided an AI that has kept things even close to as challenging.
The only drawback that I can think of is that all this amazing capability does come with a price. You need a high-end graphics card and plenty of RAM. I'm only running with a Celeron 300, but 128 megabytes of RAM, a Voodoo3 graphics card and Windows 2000 seem to provide enough horsepower to keep the game running smoothly. As long as you can run the game, I'd buy it.
