The communities that have evolved in EverQuest are one of the best reasons to become involved with this game.
EverQuest (EQ) has many of the "bells and whistles" that online MMPORG need to have and remain successful, such as engrossing and dynamic quests, rewards for achievements, character development, inventive graphics, fast game play, expansive environments open for exploration, and a familiar fantasy flavor.
The most important aspect of EQ, for me, is the individuals/groups/guilds/server population with which I interact. EQ is a society, more than just a community. You enter the EQ society as a gamer, and soon become a resident of a server, on which you play. Once you have created a character on your chosen server, you will become part of a specific race/class/alignment, which will pull you further into the EQ society. After a few days of playing EQ, and advancing through levels of experience you will likely begin to group with players of similar abilities, likes and goals. Your groups will eventually become a circle of friends with which you play often. Eventually you will likely seek out a guild to join. This guild will bring you into a larger set of friends. This guild will become your EQ family and you will find yourself enjoying the lively chat, fun game play and comaraderie offered by EQ like nothing else you have experienced online.
If EQ has any drawbacks it is its massive popularity. The 20+/- serves on which players exist are becoming over crowded and often times during the busiest of time you will find tempers short and attitudes much more angry than at less busy times. There is a planned expansion for this game which will help and new servers are promised, so I would expect some of the over crowding to disappear.
I highly recommend this game, as a wonderful experience and means through which to escape the drudgery of day-to-day stress.
Join the EQ society!
