| 5979's Full Review: Atari Jaguar |
In 1993 there was a few choices to own in the video game world, Nes 8 bit system - which was on it's last stand, & couldn't keep up with the better graphic systems. Genesis had lots of add-ons to enhance the system (Not For the Better), like Sega CD & 32X. Super Nintendo didn't sell as well as it's prior old self (NES), it offered loads of RPGs but lacked on most everything else. CD-I was Interesting but a huge bomb in the video game market, with most of it's software being education tools & not to mention a hefty $399.99 price tag along with it.
Atari Jaguar was released before any of the other guys came (Sony Playstation, N64 & 3DO), which might explain why Atari Jaguar was doomed from the start....since Atari Rushed, game management & development, most new games were incomplete & also bad ideas, which should of Never been released. Atari Jaguar was released as a 64 Bit system, it was really 32 by 32 processing (Kinda like the Turbo Grafx, 8 by 8 processing). It had a $199.99 price tag & also had a cd player that was sold sepertatly, at $249.99.
The Commerical release for Atari Jaguar was almost nill, few commercials & mixed reviews by the video game world, which made future press almost invisible.
Atari Jaguar had some truly amazing games & some truly horrible games.....
Awesome Games:
1. Alien Vs Predator - easily one of the Top Ten games of all time, this game was unfinished too! At least this was one of the first games for the Jaguar, which did help the sales for atari. Based on the alien & Predator movies, AVP was the first game to bring a shock to your system/it scared you...a first in it's own for a video game system.
2.Battlesphere: How many people can play ?!...well a whole lot!, this was to be Atari's Swan Song, not released in the stores, but one of the most anticapated games of all time.
3.Atari Karts: yea, like Mario Cart, but only better. How can you go wrong with that eerie music ?
4.Iron Soldier I & II: Polygon Robot Warrior stomps , punches & shoots buildings in the city...non stop action & quite fun as well.
5.Rayman: the classic pc game, converted to Jaguar was Exactly the same, amazing how the 64 bits were fully used on this game.
6.Power Drive Rally: Amazing realistic features from off-road driving, Exact/Percise Handling & nice add-on features.
7.Doom: Another pc game converted just as the original.
8.Club Drive: While this game has always been argued as a flop or a hidden gem, I think Club Drive is pure fun, funny polygon graphics, silly music & fun courses.
There are some other games of note like, Skiing & Snowboarding, Wolfenstein 3-D, Theme Park, Tempest 2000, Defender 2000, Worms etc..
now for the Bad Games -
1. Checkered Flag: This game takes the cake, is this a joke ?? uhhh, first of all, YOU CAN'T STEER!, scrolling is the pits, lame "Virtual Racing" copy.
2.Hoverstike Cart & Cd: Interesting...but only that, I think they forgot that we have to enjoy the game too. Hovercraft blows up stuff on other worlds, only the worlds are baron & boring.
3.Troy Aikman Football: I think the genesis did this one better then the Jaguar did! Slow & Clumsy
4. 3-D Bike racing game (Sorry, I forget title??): If you thought Checkered Flag had poor scrolling, then play this mess, Looks to be 40% finished!!
While there weren't that many duds, there were some games that could of been much improved like, All the fighting games, Highlander & Cybermorph.
At around 75 games or so, Atari Jaguar does have some real nice games, that should be reason enough for you to buy this pretty cheap ($) system. Heck, even if you don't like most of the games I mentioned, fine....but, you must own a copy of Alien Vs Predator!
