| infielderx's Full Review: Unreal Tournament for Windows |
I'm sorry, ID Software, Unreal Tournament has stolen throne from you. Quake 3 is a decent networking gaming experience, but the levels are small, and the single player game (vs. the bots) is tired. Where ID apparently left off due to boredom, Unreal Tournament continued. I'll be honest; I haven't finished the single player portion of the game (I've only completed the first 5 maps against the bots). After only having played a limited portion of that part of the game, I can still honestly say that it's much more fulfilling than Quake 3. Not only are the bots more intelligent, the levels are more creative and fun to explore. The weapons are equally cool; they have been spruced up since Unreal came out. My favorite is the sniper rifle, with which you can use your alternative fire button (preferably mouse button 3) to zoom in on your opponent to blow his head off.
Where UT really shines is in the multiplayer game. If you have a decent connection to the internet, UT can eat up a ton of your time. Aside from the standard Capture the Flag game, there is also a cool mod called "Assault", in which you either defend a base or try to infiltrate one to achieve your main objectives. There is even one map that resembles a beach at Normandy, where you have to get past several bunkers to make it inside a cave.
The graphics and sound in UT are simply amazing. If you have a video card of at LEAST voodoo2 quality, you're in for some cool eye candy. I can't wait until I get a geforce card. With a Soundblaster Live sound card, environmental sounds will blow you away; you can tell by the style of echo of the gunshots/footsteps exactly where your opponents are. Simply put, UT is a much more satisfying game than Quake 3.
