| mwcarter's Full Review: Tempest 2000 for Windows |
Ported to the PC from the hit Atari Jaguar game of the same name, Tempest 2000, originally designed by Jeff Minter of Llamasoft fame (he also programmed the Jaguar CD's VLM), is a welcome trip down memory lane, albeit a psychedelic one. An update of Atari's 80's vector graphic game Tempest, Tempest 2000 keeps the original gameplay intact while pumping it up with updated graphics, special effects and perhaps the best cartridge based soundtrack ever heard. Including four different gameplay modes, Classic, Plus, 2000 & VS., Minter does it in style too. Throw in some mind-bendingly psychedelic bonus levels and you have a game whose total package far outweighs its cost. While the PC version has some visually flawed Jaguar-specific effects (the Melt-o-Vision on the bonus levels is rather pixellated as compared to the Jag's smooth flowing effect courtesy of its 64-Bit blitter), overall, the higher-resolution gives it a sharper appearance. Overall, it's a great title, and it will only set you back about $10.
Please note that the Interplay version is Windows 95 compatible. The earlier Atari Interactive version (the one with cooler box art) is DOS only.
