| tommy_lop's Full Review: Atari 7800 |
The Atari 7800 was my first video game systems, I got it when I was 5 years old. All though the 7800 was definitely behind the NES has far has power goes, it was still a fun machine. Unfortunately my Atari 7800 got fried when I was only 7.
The system
The system is a black and silver system, with small power and reset button. That's right buttons not switches like the 2600. The 7800 is also a whole lot less bulky and weighs a lot less.
Unlike the NES you enter the cartage’s from the top like you do with a lot of the more modern gaming system. Because of this the Atari 7800 had a lot less bugs.
The hookup:
In my 2600 review I stated that the Atari would not hook up to cable.
The truth of the matter is that I don't know if the 7800 will hook up to cable either. We did not get cable until I was around 8, and my then my 7800 was long past fried.
It should hook up to cable, after all the NES did and that was released a year earlier and it hook up to cable, but I am not positive.
The controllers:
The controllers are the worst part of the system. They are defiantly blister makers. The controls are long and slender with a joystick on top and two buttons on the side.
Now the controllers have no problems with platform games like Donkey Kong when you only had to hit the buttons to jump every now and then. Racing games are a different story seeing how you have to hold down a button has hard has you can to get your car go faster, The way you have to hold the controller your thumbs will get sore after a few minutes.
The games:
The games on the Atari all though not has good has the NES, are still fun. Another great thing about the Atari 7800 is that you can play all the 2600 games on it. This way you can play all the great 2600 games with out all the bulk or pain of the 2600.
Here are a few of my favorite 7800 only games.
Mario Bros:(not super mario bros)
Mario Bros. was a port of the arcade classic. You control two plumbers Mario and Luigi why they try to exterminate a sewer full of bugs. You have to hit the bugs from a platform below to knock them over, and then kick them while they are still down.
Unfortunately the only thing that has come close to this game is the battle mode on Super Mario bros. 3. In the whole point of that is to see how many times you can stab the other player in the back. Now in the original game you where better off helping the other player then trying to kill him off. All though it was still funny to hit the POW button just has the other player was about to kick a bug off.
Food fight:
Another game I miss from when I had my 7800. The goal of the game was to get across the screen and eat an ice cream cone before it melts. The bad guys are these chefs that throw food at you. You can get rid of these pests by throwing food back at them.
If you touch the chiefs or any of the food that hits you then you die. You can also die if you fall into any of the pits that are on the screen.
Donkey Kong
Who can forget this classic game. The 7800 version of the game was just has clean has the NES version. Climb the latters and get to the top before Donkey Kong can hit you with a barrel.
Pole Position 2
This is better then the arcade original. Not only could you race on the original course, or you could race on 3 completely different courses.
If you are looking for an Atari to play 2600 games you should skip the original 2600, and get a 7800. It’s a lot more reliable then the NES or the original 2600.
