Going to Hastings, I was looking at renting a Nintendo 64 game to rent. Because I enjoy playing the games that not as many others like, I usually have problems finding a game I want to rent. As I looked through the two isles of Nintendo 64 games, I kept seeing the same type of games over and over. I was having trouble finding any game that I would like playing.
In the isle next to me there were 3 little kids acting suspicious. They kept saying things like, "Rip it off! Just go up to it and take it off." It took me awhile but I finally figured out what they were talking about. Right in front of where they were standing was the Nintendo 64 game South Park. On the box for the game were 2 stickers. One read that only mature players should rent this game and another put on by Hastings read "18+ to rent." The "18+ to rent" was slightly peeled off. I believe that they were trying to trick their parents into letting them rent the game, and if they peeled off the 18+ sticker then their parents wouldn't know they shouldn't rent it. It turns out that the kids did not get to rent this game, but they did make me interested in getting it.
Since I'm not a huge South Park fan, I was reluctant to get the game. I didn't see any other that caught my attention though, so I decided it was worth a try. I was looking for something that allowed for 2 players, since I wanted to be able to play against my husband also. I noticed that this game allowed for multiplayers so I thought it was worth a try.
The game starts with the story of the game, which I usually skip over since I have little patience with these type of things. From what I gathered for the small section I watched was that a comet was going to hit South Park and make “crazy” and “spooky” stuff happen.
Starting the game you can choose from two different options: single player story mode or multiplayer. My first journey to save South Park was in the single player story mode. From here I was prompted with a menu to choose my character. I had a choice of: Cartman, Kyle, Stan, or Kenny. I choose Cartman and begin. Instantly I’m on a street in South Park surrounded by houses. In my hand I hold a snowball. Cartman says, “Where are you guys?” letting me know I need to find the three others (Kyle, Stan, and Kenny).
I quickly find out that I can throw my snowballs and I walk down the street wondering what I’m about to run into. Suddenly I get attacked by all these turkeys. In order to get rid of the turkeys, I need to throw snowballs at them. This may sound easy, but it’s not. It’s difficult aiming directly at the turkey. In fact it’s difficult enough just moving around. This game puts you in first person mode like the game of Doom.Trying to kill the turkey makes me very disoriented and confused. I usually end up turning around in circles for a couple minutes until I actually kill the turkey. The turkey in turn pecks at me and takes away part of my character’s life.
After killing this turkey, I continue on my journey to find my friends. I get attacked by gangs of turkeys on the way but survive to find Kenny. I’m not exactly sure what I need to do once I find Kenny so I throw snowballs at him. Throwing snowballs at him did not do much of anything but waste my time. What you need to do is run directly over him so he ends up joining you. I try and try to run over Kenny but find it very difficult. I keep spinning in circles and am very disoriented. To make it worse, Kenny keeps moving so I can’t keep up with him.
Finally I get Kenny and am off the save Kyle and Stan. The strange thing is that while I’m searching for Kyle and Stan I run into Cartman. Since I am Cartman, it really makes no sense that there is another Cartman on the game I need to save. Maybe I have a twin, who knows?
I end up saving everyone except for one before a large gang turkeys lead to my death. By this point I’m about ready to throw up and I have a huge headache. These first person Nintendo 64 games end up making me very sick and confused. Call me crazy, but I enjoy third person games much better.
I decide to end my single player game and move on to multiplayer. I’m hoping the multiplayer game isn’t another one where I have to hunt down my opponent and kill them. Guess what? That’s exactly what the multiplayer mode is. Yuck.
I start the game and find goodies all over the place. I pick up guns and other strange things that will help me kill my opponent. The final weapon I end up with is a turkey, which aids me in killing the other player.
This is where my journey of playing South Park ended. I had a huge headache and felt very sick to my stomach. Quite a disappointment, I packed up South Park in the plastic case and returned it to Hastings two days early.
