| Terran82's Full Review: Destruction Derby for Nintendo 64 |
Destruction Derby has come to your N64. This game changes the rules and turns out to be a fun game in the end.
Destruction Derby 64 is different from other N64 racers. Instead of trying to finish in first you have to destroy your car. I mean you have to crash into the competition until your car burst into flames. You don’t win the races by finishing in first but by destroying the other racers. You earn yourself points by damaging your fellow racers and the more cars you wreck the more points you get.
Some of the tracks aren’t tracks but arenas. Others are circuits with checkpoints. In the circuits half the competitors race one way and the other half drive the other way. When you crash head on you start racking up big points. There is also a collision-free time-trial mode for racing purists.
The graphics in Destruction Derby 64 aren’t anything amazing. It’s not horrible but it could have been a lot better. The textures are smooth and fairly detailed but some are fuzzy and blurry. The lens flare will start to get in the way because it comes in the cracks of your broken front mirror. The sounds are decent too. The engine sounds are weak and so is the poor music. I don’t know what it is but it doesn’t belong in this type of game. I don’t know about you but I rather be driving and destroying stuff while listening to Metallica than some unknown band. Destruction Derby 64 does have an announcer but he has a total of 5 phrases. He starts to get annoying after a while.
You start off the game with a few vehicles that are exactly alike. The only thing different is the paint design. By winning races you will unlock new cars. The computer isn’t stupid in this game. If you try to make a head on collision they will move out of your way if they have the chance to. Destruction Derby 64 is a pretty easy game. But it is very fun and with 4 player support, and hidden cars you will be playing this game for a while
