After waiting seven hours online I finally got my Playstation 2. And after all the hype, blood, sweat, and tears, was it worth it? Well that remains to be seen.
The Games:
Short and sweet, you will be better off waiting for the hype to die down before you shell out $300 for this monster. The system is undoubtedly the most powerful system in the world, however the games released thus far are mediocre at best. If your a big graphics junkie you won't be disappointed. Games like Tekken Tag and Kessen are phenomenal to the very last detail (In Tekken, there are realistic reflections in puddles, and the tassle on Jin's pants move as he moves). As far as gameplay, there aren't any deep games like Soul Caliber (Not even Tekken), Resident Evil, or Metal Gear, or at least not yet. Sony has such an amazing roster of game developers, you will be sure that great games are on their way but right now its just alot of filler. Around March, when Sony has promised a regular shipment of systems, you can expect a better selection of games.
The system is backward compatible, which means it will play all your old games. So if your old system is on the fritz, you won't have to buy two systems, just this one. PS2 does do some justice to the old games, making them look brighter, and edges more defined, but don't look for brand new games or PS2 graphics, it just won't happen
One major problem of note, the system does not come with a demo disc, forcing you to pick a game. This really bites cause most people expect a demo and use it to make a decision on what games to buy. For the amount of money already spent on the system it would have been nice to get something for free.
The Controller:
The system comes with the Dual Shock 2 controller in smokey gray. Its basically the same as the first dual shock except all the buttons this time around are analog. What this means is that the buttons are touch sensitive. For instance, if your playing a racing game, when you hit the button for gas, depending on the pressure you apply is how much gas you'll get, not unlike real life, and only for games that are compatible with it which aren't many right now. For now though, if you want to get into some two player action, you can use your existing playstation controllers, they work just fine. Only problem (I tend to have those alot, no?) it only has two ports, and your old multi tap (4 way) won't work.
As a DVD:
One very cool thing about PS2 is that it can be used a DVD player. And I must say if you don't have a DVD yet, than this is your ideal bet. I popped in The Matrix and it looked really good, dare I say better than my stand alone Sony DVD. It also has optical out to connect to a reciever with a Dolby Digital decoder. And yes there is a tremondous difference when it comes to sound so if you don't have one pick one up if your serious about movies.
Overall:
The system will be phenomenal when the good games come out for it. But to pay what people are charging for it for Christmas (last I checked ebay it was at about $700) is just wrong. If you want a really great system for the money and has a great library of games, then go for a Dreamcast. You will find alot of the games are at the $19.99 mark and are all pretty decent. But come March when the price is back down (or maybe lower, cross your fingers) this is a must have for the true gamer, or the kid at heart. Add a star to this review then.
